Apple’s upcoming iPhone is set to come with wireless charging which will enable users to charge the phone without having to plug it in.
Metal body and wireless charging don’t play well together. And Apple is reportedly looking for solutions to get the feature on the next-gen iPhone.
Apple is widely expected to launch three new phones this year – the iPhone 7s, the iPhone 7s Plus and a special edition ‘iPhone 8’ to mark the 10th year anniversary of the iPhone. Besides refreshed design, a lot of the new features are expected on the new iPhone – one of which is support for wireless charging. Previous reports already hinted that Apple could ditch aluminum bodies and opt for a glass panel to ease wireless charging. Now, a latest report sheds more light on the material Apple will be using on its new iPhones.
The iPhone 4s was the last Apple device to feature glass back, after which the company has always preferred aluminum panel. However, as metal body and wireless charging doesn’t quite play well together, Apple is reportedly moving back to glass panel chassis for the new iPhone – at least for the iPhone 8. According to Korean media, Apple is working with Chinese supplier Biel Crystal, which currently provides sapphire crystal for camera lenses and Apple Watch screen.
The company is also supplying ‘thermoformed glass chassis’ samples to Apple for the iPhone 8, ETNewsreports. The report also suggests that Apple will go for a metal frame, sandwiched between front and back glass, just like Samsung smartphones such as the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S7 edge. Samsung calls its ‘3D thermoforming’ where the glass is placed between two molds, heated to 800 degrees, and then the cover glass gets pressed into symmetrical shapes. This could also mean that the iPhone 8 could feature a wraparound display, just like the Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S7 edge and the new deceased Galaxy Note 7.
We have already seen wireless charging on the Samsung flagship smartphones and some Nokia smartphones such as the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1520. However, they all need to be placed on a mat for charging, and the only thing it does away is the need of connecting the data cable to the device’s charging port. Based on the leaks and reports we have come across so far, Apple may introduce ‘long-distance’ wireless charging that will let you charge your smartphone from a distance of up to 15 feet.
The iPhone 8 is likely to drop the physical home button, and come with an all-screen display instead, similar to the Xiaomi Mi MIX and the LG G6. The smartphone is also expected to boast facial and gesture recognition, courtesy of an infrared sensor and a laser sensor placed near the selfie camera. Rumors also suggest that Apple will do away with the physical TouchID button and embed the fingerprint sensor under the display. What’s more, a new Taptic engine for 3D Touch and dual-rear cameras are also expected.
Sure the iPhone 8 does sound interesting, but we will have to wait until Apple officially announces it to see how many of these rumored features finally make it to the phone.
